From a 1998 Isiolo Women's Welfare Group to a Regional PBO Leader

PWHE was born in June 1998 when courageous women from Isiolo’s pastoralist communities united as a welfare group to address maternal mortality and girl-child school dropout. Registered as a CBO in 2005 and as an NGO in 2006, PWHE is regulated by the Public Benefit Organizations (PBO) Regulatory Authority.

Governance & Ethics

Core Values & Accountability

Dignity & Inclusion

Leaving no pastoralist woman, girl, youth, or person with disability behind.

Community Ownership

Solutions designed and led by indigenous pastoralist women and elders.

Transparency

Full compliance with PBO Regulatory Authority standards and donor audits.

Zero Tolerance Policy

Strict zero tolerance to fraud, corruption, and sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (PSEAH).

Our Strategic Programmes

Integrated, culturally responsive interventions addressing the root causes of vulnerability among pastoralist women and girls in Northern and North-Eastern Kenya.

Pillar 01

Accessible Healthcare & Nutrition

Pastoralist families often travel vast distances to reach static health facilities. PWHE brings life-saving primary healthcare and health education directly to mobile and settled pastoralist villages (manyattas).

  • Maternal & Child Health: Skilled birth attendance referrals, antenatal/postnatal awareness, and immunization drives.
  • SRHR & Anti-FGM: Community dialogues with elders, mothers, and youth to end FGM and child marriage.
  • WASH & Nutrition: Malnutrition screening for children under 5 and pregnant mothers during drought cycles.
  • Mental Health & GBV Response: Safe referral pathways and psychosocial support for GBV survivors.
Pillar 02

Inclusive Quality Education

Education is the strongest equalizer for pastoralist girls. PWHE works with schools, Boards of Management, parents, and county education offices to keep girls in school and thriving.

  • Scholarships & Bursaries: Secondary and tertiary support for vulnerable girls from Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu & Garissa.
  • Menstrual Hygiene Management: Distribution of reusable sanitary kits and girl-friendly school WASH facilities.
  • School Mentorship Clubs: Rights awareness, STEM encouragement, and life-skills coaching.
  • Disability Inclusion: Advocating for accessible learning environments for children with disabilities.
Pillar 03

Natural Resources Governance & Economic Empowerment

Climate shocks and rangeland degradation disproportionately impact pastoralist women. PWHE equips women to sit at natural resource decision tables and build resilient livelihoods.

  • Rangeland & Water Governance: Integrating women into Community Land Management Committees and WRUAs.
  • Women’s Economic Collectives: Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), camel milk value chains, and fodder production.
  • Climate Justice & Peacebuilding: Cross-county women peace networks mitigating resource-based conflicts.
  • Clean Energy & Tree Growing: Briquette enterprise and dryland agroforestry around schools and water pans.
